A total of 71 human lives have been lost in Karnataka owing to rains so far since April 1.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Saturday that a compensation of ₹5 lakh had been distributed to the families of the deceased.

During this period, there were 48 lightning strikes, nine tree-fall incidents, five cases of house collapse, four drownings, four people lost their lives in landslips, and there was one electrocution case.

Besides, there were losses of 702 animals, out of which compensation has already been distributed to the concerned in 698 cases.

As many as 2,068 houses were also damaged, out of which compensation had already been distributed to the owners of 1,926 houses. Around 75 houses were completely damaged and 1,993 were partially damaged due to the excess rain during the pre-monsoon period.

“A total of 15,378.32 hectares of crops have been damaged. Around 11,915.66 hectares of agricultural crops and 3,462 hectares of horticultural crops was damaged. Crop damage details have been provided to be entered in the compensation software, and the compensation payment process is in progress,” the Chief Minister said.
