Over 800 transpersons have benefitted from the self-employment assistance extended to them since 2021, the Tamil Nadu government said on Sunday.
Self-employment assistance up to a sum of ₹50,000 has been provided by allocating ₹1 crore every year through the Transgender Welfare Board. Under the Higher Education Scheme, the fees for four transpersons have been paid, an official release said.
Listing out the steps taken by the State government for the welfare of transpersons, it said ₹2 crore has been allocated for 2024-25. The Chief Minister has instructed officials to support them with the tuition and hostel fees to aid their higher education.
On the directions of the Chief Minister, the State government also enhanced the monthly pension for transpersons, who were 40 years of age and above to aid them in meeting out their daily living, from ₹1,000 to ₹1,500. Pension to the tune of ₹1.53 crore were allocated for 1,311 transpersons during 2022-23, ₹2.49 crore for 1,482 of them during 2023-24.
During 2024-25, funds to the tune of ₹2.70 crore was allocated to provide pension to 1,599 transpersons. For 2025-26, ₹3 crore was allocated to provide pension to 1,760 transpersons, it said.
