Intermittent heavy showers accompanied by squally winds that lashed Alappuzha since Saturday destroyed two houses and damaged another 29 dwellings in different parts of the district. The houses destroyed were in Kainakary South and Thakazhi villages in Kuttanad. Many of the houses suffered damage after trees fell on them.

People living along the coastline are on the edge after being hit by high tidal waves. Strong waves wreaked havoc in Punnapra, Thrikkunnappuzha, and Ambalappuzha, among other coastal areas.

Waterlogging has been reported from several low-lying areas in the district. Officials on Sunday said that there was no panic situation and they were closely monitoring water levels in rivers in the region. They said that buildings had already been identified for opening 394 relief camps in case of emergencies.

Meanwhile, the Irrigation department has initiated preliminary steps to cut open Thottappally pozhi to ensure the flow of excess water from Kuttanad to the sea. District Collector Alex Varghese visited the pozhi and reviewed the preparations.

The weather agency has declared an orange alert for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in Alappuzha on Monday. It also declared a yellow alert for isolated heavy rainfall in the district for the next three days.
