Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Monday said that service roads on the busy Outer Ring Road (ORR) between Hebbal and Silk Board will be merged with the main carriageway to ease congestion till the metro construction on the road is completed. He inspected the area on Monday.
“Merging service roads with main roads by removing dividers will help facilitate smoother traffic flow,” the Minister said.
The decision comes in the wake of metro construction occupying significant portions of road space and disrupting vehicular movement.
The move follows a recent meeting with officials from the Greater Bengaluru region, where it was decided to implement the measure across a 40-50 km stretch of affected areas. “The DCM also held discussions with several city MLAs before arriving at this decision,” a release from his office added.
“With metro works underway across key stretches of the city, traffic snarls have become routine, especially during peak hours. The integration of service roads is expected to temporarily increase the width of the carriageway and offer some relief to commuters,” a official from BBMP said.
