Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday unveiled the foundation stone for the construction of the Kalaignar Convention Centre in Muttukadu at a total cost of ₹525 crore.

The facility, named after former Chief Minister and DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi, would spread over 37 acres on the East Coast Road, south of Chennai.

The centre would have a convention hall with a seating capacity for 5,000 people, an auditorium with 1,500 seats, and an exhibition hall with 10,000 capacity. It would also have landscaped open spaces, dining areas, and parking space for around 1,600 cars and 1,700 two-wheelers, an official release said.

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, Minister for Public Works E.V. Velu, Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam, and senior officials were among those present at the function.

In a separate event, the Chief Minister inaugurated several projects being implemented by the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department at a cost of ₹30 crore. They include construction of classrooms, and sports infrastructure.

Additionally, Mr. Stalin unveiled the foundation stone for projects being taken up by the Greater Chennai Corporation at a total cost of ₹59 crore. Some of the projects are the construction of new bridges, commercial complexes, and other buildings.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated projects of the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board completed at a cost of ₹188 crore, and flagged off 50 vehicles procured at ₹19 crore.

Ministers K.N. Nehru and P.K. Sekarbabu, Mayor R. Priya and senior officials were present on the occasion.
