Opera has officially pulled the curtain back on something pretty groundbreaking: the Opera Neon AI browser.
It’s being called the first agentic AI web browser, and it’s designed to do much more than just help you navigate websites, it actually performs tasks for you. Think of it like a browser that understands what you want and then just… does it.
This isn’t some vague “AI integration” either. Opera Neon uses natural language processing so you can just talk to it like a person. Want to book a hotel or fill out a form? Just ask. Need a quick summary of the page you’re reading? The browser handles it. It even lets you create things, like code snippets, websites, or reports, without needing to leave the page.
Opera’s Senior AI Product Director, Henrik Lexow, explained the shift clearly: “We’re at a point where AI can fundamentally change how we use the internet.” That’s exactly what Opera Neon is aiming to do. The AI isn’t just a chatbot bolted onto a browser, it’s fully integrated and feels native to the experience.
The AI agent in Neon can perform web tasks like shopping or booking services by interacting directly with the content on a page. It recognizes what you’re looking at and knows what steps to take next. What’s even better is that a lot of these tasks happen locally, keeping your data private. No need to worry about your personal info flying around the internet.
But it doesn’t stop at your local machine. Opera Neon includes agents that run in the cloud on a virtual machine. That means if you’re working on a project, say, building a website or designing a simple game, the AI can keep going even if you shut your laptop and walk away.
The AI browser can research, design, and build on your behalf, understanding your goals and working toward them while you focus on other things. It’s a bold new step toward what Opera calls “agentic browsing,” where the browser becomes a co-pilot rather than a tool.
A waitlist for the premium subscription to Opera Neon is already open, and early adopters will get access to the full feature set. This includes the complete AI engine that powers all of these tasks and integrations.
So, whether you’re tired of clicking through endless forms, or you’re a creator who wants AI help to bring your ideas to life, Opera Neon is looking like a smart bet. It’s not just a browser anymore, it’s more like a digital assistant built right into your daily internet experience.
This could be the first step toward a whole new way of browsing.
