Stig Asmussen, best known as the director behind Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, is diving into a whole new fantasy universe, Dungeons and Dragons.
After leaving Respawn Entertainment in 2023 to pursue new ventures, Asmussen founded a new AAA studio called Giant Skull. Now, the studio has revealed its first project: a single-player action-adventure game set in the Dungeons and Dragons universe.
The upcoming title is being developed in collaboration with Wizards of the Coast and will be powered by Unreal Engine 5. While specific details are still under wraps, it’s clear the focus will be on immersive storytelling, cinematic action, and high-energy traversal, hallmarks of Asmussen’s previous work.
Stig shared in a statement that the team at Giant Skull is built around creativity and curiosity. “Our goal is to craft a rich new Dungeons and Dragons universe filled with immersive storytelling, heroic combat and exhilarating traversal that players will fully embrace,” he said.
This Dungeons and Dragons video game marks the first major project for Giant Skull, which launched officially in early 2024. At its core, the studio is aiming to create gameplay-driven, story-rich experiences that resonate with fans of third-person action titles.
Giant Skull has gathered an impressive lineup of talent from across the industry. Team members have worked on heavy hitters like God of War, League of Legends, Fortnite, and of course, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Notably, Jon Carr, the technical director on Survivor, and Anthony Scott, former head at Rocksteady Studios, have joined Asmussen in leadership roles.
Anthony Scott described the studio’s ambitions clearly: “We’re creating something special and have been fortunate enough to assemble an incredible initial team of developers who are extremely passionate and experienced in creating genre-defining, third-person action-adventures.”
Fans of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order can likely expect a familiar tone and style: a single-player narrative, tight combat mechanics, and detailed environments with exploration and platforming elements. But with Dungeons and Dragons as the backdrop, the team has an entirely new fantasy playground to bring to life.
Though there’s no release window yet, expectations are high. The combination of seasoned devs, a beloved fantasy IP, and Unreal Engine 5 technology sets the stage for something big.
More details on the game are expected to drop later, but one thing’s for sure: Stig Asmussen’s Dungeons and Dragons game is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing titles in development right now.
