Jonathan Daviss has officially been cast to play Snoop Dogg in the long-awaited biopic about the iconic rapper’s life.
Best known for his role as Pope in the Netflix series Outer Banks, the 25-year-old actor will take on his biggest role yet, portraying one of hip hop’s most legendary figures.
Director Craig Brewer, who previously helmed Hustle & Flow and Dolemite Is My Name, is on board to direct the film. Deadline confirmed the casting, and fans of both Daviss and Snoop are already buzzing with excitement.
This Snoop Dogg movie has been in development for years, with the rapper himself producing alongside Brian Grazer and Sara Ramaker. It’s also the first film from Death Row Pictures, the company Snoop acquired in 2022 when he took ownership of the iconic Death Row Records.
The story tracks Snoop’s journey from the streets of Long Beach, California, to becoming a global music superstar. Starting out under the mentorship of Dr Dre and making his debut on The Chronic, Snoop quickly made a name for himself. In 1993, he dropped his first album Doggystyle, which became an instant classic and helped define West Coast rap.
The film will also cover Snoop’s collaborations with legendary artists like Tupac Shakur, and his time as one of Death Row’s biggest stars during the ’90s. Known for hits like Gin and Juice, Drop It Like It’s Hot, and What’s My Name?, Snoop has become one of the best-selling rap artists in history.
But the Snoop Dogg biopic isn’t just about the music. It’ll also dive into his evolution as a cultural icon. From starring in cult movies like Half Baked and Training Day, to becoming a business mogul with ventures like his cannabis brand Leafs By Snoop and his bestselling cookbook From Crook to Cook, Snoop has always found ways to stay relevant and surprising.
Snoop himself has been very hands-on with the project. He said he waited until the right team was assembled before moving forward. “I wanted to choose the right director, the perfect writer, and the greatest movie company… It was the perfect marriage. It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni,” he joked.
Universal Pictures, the studio behind Straight Outta Compton, is backing the film. That movie grossed over $200 million and proved there’s a big appetite for well-told stories about rap legends. Donna Langley, chairwoman at Universal, said Snoop’s life story makes for the kind of film that leaves a lasting cultural impact.
With Jonathan Daviss cast and the creative team in place, this Snoop Dogg biopic looks like it’s finally on track. Expect music, drama, and a look at how a kid from Long Beach became a global force.
