The Elvis Presley of Yuhinas – The Stripe-Throated Yuhina |
The Stripe-Throated Yuhina is a large brown Yuhina with a tall, upswept crest like Elvis Presleys and a black-and-orange panels on the wings. Its Streaked throat is diagnostic but difficult to see, which gives it its name; best told apart from other yuhinas by relatively undistinguished head pattern. It has a greyish-brown back, wings, and tail, with a white belly and a stripe of black spots or streaks on the throat. The Stripe-Throated Yuhina is a rather large, dusky Yuhina with prominent erect crest, black-streaked throat and orange-buff wingpanel, slightly forked tail. It is a medium sized bird reaching a length of only up to 12 to 16 cms in length and weighing 12 to 26 gms. The Nominate race has elongate and erectile crown feathers rather dusky brown, mixed with warmer brown, tips dull greyish; upperparts and upperwing drab warm-tinged (variable) mid-brown, paler and more pinkish-grey on nape, rump paler and warmer, tail dark brown with dark rufescent wash and outer fringes; primary coverts and primaries blackish-brown, secondaries except outermost with pale orange-buff outer vanes (forming prominent panel); lores dusky, with blackish band to above eye, head side including supercilium medium brownish-grey; submoustachial area dirty pinkish-buff, chin and throat similar and with regular lines of dark brown streaks and malar line; underparts dirty ochre-buff; iris dark reddish-brown to pale brown; upper mandible dark brown, lower mandible basally brownish-yellow to fleshy-horn, distally dark brown; legs yellow to brownish-flesh or fleshy orange. Both the Sexes are similar. Juvenile is slightly darker rufous-brown above, especially on uppertail-coverts and crest shorter. The Stripe-Throated Yuhina is found from the Himalayas, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar to Southern China and Central Vietnam. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. Found in Temperate Oak, Birch and Rhododendron Forest or mixed Rhododendron and Coniferous Forest, occasionally low scrub and Bamboo. In Indian Subcontinent, breeds at 2135 to 3700 mtrs, some descending to 1700 mtrs (rarely 1160 mtrs) in winter. It eats beetles, wasps and other insects, berries, flower nectar, seeds and sugar-rich sap from bark. It is usually found in small parties, often in association with mixed feeding flocks which may contain other small babblers. It forages in taller bushes and lower branches of trees, sometimes low down. Behaviour somewhat like that of a Paridae, but slower.
