Maren Morris is getting real about life after divorce and how it’s changed her social circle.

The 35-year-old singer-songwriter split from fellow musician Ryan Hurd last year after six years of marriage. While the two are still friendly and focused on raising their 5-year-old son Hayes, the end of their relationship has created some unexpected distance between her and people she once considered close friends.

In a recent episode of the Therapuss podcast with Jake Shane, Maren opened up about how things have shifted since the split. “In Nashville, you know I’ve been divorced for a little over a year now,” she shared. “It’s a small town and we’re all friends and we all work together, and the music industry is very tiny there.”

Even though she and Ryan remain on good terms, Maren admitted that the social fallout has been tough to navigate. “I’m really friendly with my ex and we have our son, that’s always our biggest priority,” she explained. “It is weird because we were together for so long that so many of our friends had to sort of… pick sides.”

She recalled running into a close friend of Ryan’s at a bar and feeling the awkwardness firsthand. “We all used to hang out together for a decade or more – and then it’s like, damn, it’s just going to be kind of weird. Maybe it’s just going to be weird for the first few years, I don’t know.”

It’s not just the divorce that’s shifted Maren’s inner circle. She said becoming a mother and the COVID-19 pandemic also changed the dynamics of her friendships. “New motherhood is already such a lonely time, and you’re very isolated,” she said. “You just naturally kind of realise, ‘Oh, those people probably put me in a different drawer.’”

Still, it hasn’t been all bad. Maren said she’s also formed deeper bonds with other moms who helped her through the early years of parenting. “There are some badass b****es that got me through a lot of that,” she added.

Despite the ups and downs, Maren and Ryan seem to have co-parenting down to a science. The two live just five minutes apart and often get together for family dinners. “Our stops are really easy,” she told The Zoe Report. Hayes spends alternate weeks with each parent, which has forced Maren to get used to her new normal.

“Those weeks I have him, the house is full of chaos and energy and laughter and scraped knees,” she said. “And then, when he is not there, you have to recalibrate your alone-ness because you’re like, ‘Wow, this is just me in here now.’ That’s when I’ve leaned into it and not been drowned by my own company.”

Maren Morris may be navigating a new chapter, but she’s doing it with honesty, grace, and a little help from her circle -even if it looks a little different now.
