Polyphenic larva.

Polyphenic larva.

Pergesa is a monotypic moth genus. Its only
species, Pergesa acteus, the ‘Green Pergesa
Hawkmoth’, was described by Pieter Cramer in 1779.
It is found in Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Myanmar,
Thailand, China, Taiwan, Japan , Peninsular
Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines….
The primary color for P. acteus larvae is
generally green, while some larval forms might
have pinkish or reddish hues………
Polyphenism allows an individual to respond
adaptively to variability in its environment, and
one of the most variable features of a
caterpillar’s environment is its foodplant.Effects
of hostplants on larval coloration may be fairly
widespread among hawkmoths, with colour
correlations having been documented between
hostplant variation and sphingid larval morphs.
Here the pink colour maybe is from the ingestion
of caladium leaves.
