Melissa Barrera is ready to shake things up in her acting career.
Known for her scream queen status in horror hits like Scream, Abigail, and Your Monster, the 34-year-old actress says she’s craving change. Speaking on The Seeds podcast, she explained that while horror is fun and full of great scripts, she doesn’t want to be boxed into just one genre.
“I love horror. It’s super fun. But I’ve never liked putting myself in a box,” Barrera said. “I have a lot of other skills that I want to showcase and play with. I get bored easily if I’m doing the same thing.”
Barrera, who first gained major attention in In the Heights, isn’t just seeking variety for herself. She also knows how important representation is. Reflecting on her role in Scream (2022), she shared how landing that part meant opening doors for other Latino actors. “The big reason I wanted that role so badly was because I knew the character had a family. If I got the role, it meant more opportunities for other Latinos in the cast.”
Her path hasn’t been easy. Barrera acknowledged that being Mexican in Hollywood often means pushing harder for roles that weren’t written with people like her in mind. “You kind of have to fight for more room. People aren’t always looking for someone who looks like you, but you knock on the door and say, ‘Maybe just let me try?’”
In 2023, things took a rough turn when she was dropped from the Scream franchise after making comments about the war in Gaza. The fallout was intense. She told The Independent that the following 10 months were brutally quiet. “It was the darkest and hardest year of my life. I had to re-evaluate everything. There were times I felt like my life was over.”
Offers did come in, but most were uninspiring. “People assumed I’d take anything, but I’ve never been that kind of actor. I give too much of myself to settle for a role I’m not passionate about,” she explained. “Inside I’m constantly freaking out.”
Still, she’s not backing down. Barrera is determined to stretch herself, seek new challenges, and show off everything she has to offer, not just in horror, but across genres. Her goal is clear: keep growing, keep pushing, and bring others with her while she does.
The Melissa Barrera acting career is one of grit, talent, and refusal to be typecast. Whether or not she stays in the horror lane, she’s already making an impact where it counts.
