Thiruvananthapuram: State minority commission has initiated a suo moto case on the non-commencement of operations of mother and child block at SAT Hospital, a vital facility for the underprivileged.

The commission observed that it remains non-operational even nine years after its inauguration. Commission chairman A A Rasheed instructed authorities concerned to submit an urgent report on the matter.

The building, constructed at a cost of Rs 30 crore and spanning 66,000 sq ft, was inaugurated by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on May 24, 2017. Despite being fully equipped across three floors, the reason for the non-commencement of operations remains unknown, the commission said.

The commission took a serious note of this issue and decided to seek a report from the authorities. The commission found that there should have been a respite for the heavy rush of patients to the hospital if the block was made operational.

The commission has directed the health secretary, district collector, director of medical education, medical college principal and SAT Hospital superintendent to submit a report on the issue by July 5.
