Rapper Cash Out, whose real name is John Gibson, has just been hit with a crushing sentence, life in prison plus 70 years.

The Atlanta-born emcee was found guilty of rape, RICO violations, and other crimes linked to a sex trafficking ring he allegedly led with the help of his mother and cousin. The sentencing went down on Friday in Atlanta, wrapping up a shocking case that’s been building for years.

Cash Out made waves in 2012 with his chart-topping single “Cashin’ Out,” and followed it up in 2014 with another hit, “She Twerkin,” and his debut album Let’s Get It. But his music career was eclipsed by the serious criminal accusations brought against him in June 2023. Prosecutors say he used his celebrity status to lure women into forced sex work and ran the operation for nearly seven years.

The trial, which started two months ago, revealed damning evidence, including text messages pulled from eight different cellphones. Prosecutors painted a disturbing picture of Gibson’s “seven-year reign of terror,” where he allegedly manipulated and exploited women for profit. Fulton County prosecutor Earnell Winfrey didn’t hold back in court, stating, “This ain’t just straight pimping, this is trafficking.”

But Gibson wasn’t alone in this mess. His mother, Linda Smith, has also been sentenced to 30 years behind bars for her role, and his cousin, Tyrone Taylor, received the same punishment as Gibson, life in prison plus 70 years.

The court heard that Gibson, Smith, and Taylor weren’t just working the streets, they were operating what prosecutors described as a criminal enterprise. The case fell under the RICO Act, usually reserved for organized crime, and made it clear this wasn’t a one-off incident. The evidence was chilling, with the victims testifying under immense pressure, though Gibson’s legal team claimed they were coerced into testifying.

Ultimately, the jury wasn’t buying the defense. The verdict sends a loud message: fame doesn’t shield you from justice. Gibson will now spend the rest of his life in prison, with those 70 extra years stacked on top running concurrently.

Cash Out’s story went from Billboard charts to courtroom drama in the most tragic way imaginable. What started as a promising music career has now ended with a devastating downfall, involving not just him but his closest family members.
