The ominous scene left behind by Bryan Kohberger in the Idaho student slayings is becoming increasingly unsettling as police come out with more information about the night that four lives were lost.

In a July 25 interview with ABC News, Idaho State Police Lt. Darren Gilbertson explained what detectives witnessed when they entered the off-campus residence in Moscow, Idaho, where on Nov. 13, 2022, Kohberger brutally slaughtered four University of Idaho students.

Gilbertson described the house as appearing like any ordinary college house upon initial observation. However, as they room by room progressed, the horror began to be revealed. In Xana Kernodle’s second-floor bedroom, she lay on the floor, while Ethan Chapin, who had spent the night there, was discovered dead in bed. Chapin’s blood had actually leaked out of the room and could be seen from the exterior of the house. That’s how widespread the damage was.

An autopsy revealed Kernodle was stabbed more than 50 times, she had most of her wounds in a defensive manner, sources obtained by E! News reported. Police proceeded to the third floor, where blood was found on the stairwell going up to the room in which Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen were sleeping. Their bodies were discovered in Mogen’s bed.

Prosecutors remain unsure to this day what Bryan Kohberger’s motive was, but Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson suspects that one of the third-floor women was his intended target. The notorious knife sheath, from which investigators obtained DNA that identified Kohberger, was lying beside Mogen’s body.

Even more shocking is what police said about Goncalves’ injuries. One officer called her face “disfigured,” and Gilbertson said she had distinctive injuries that seemed to be horizontal, though police still have no idea what made them. “I don’t think any of us were ready for what we saw,” Gilbertson said. “These were four young, totally innocent kids.

Kohberger first pleaded not guilty but later accepted a deal to escape the death penalty. He pleaded guilty to four charges of first-degree murder and one charge of burglary. On July 23, he was given four consecutive life sentences, plus another 10 years in prison.

This killer is now in the custody of the Department of Correction,” declared Thompson. “That door’s shut behind him and it’s not gonna open again till he’s dead.

The nation was shocked by the crime, not only due to its violence, but also because Kohberger was a PhD student in criminology at the time. His cold calculation, absence of clear motive, and brutality of the attacks remain haunting for investigators as well as families.

Though two other roommates, Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke, were home at the time of the murders, they were physically unscathed. But the horror of what went on that night reverberates outside the walls of that small-town Idaho house. With each new detail that surfaces, the full extent of what took place continues to settle in, and it’s just as horrific as ever.
