Herbalife Nutrition recalled its top-selling Relaxation Tea at the national level after the wrong ingredient combination was discovered to have slipped through the cracks during manufacturing.

The recall is to nearly 6,000 packets of the tea packaged in 48-gram and distributed not just across the United States, but also in Mexico and Ecuador. The problem began, the Food and Drug Administration’s recall report said, when Herbalife was provided with the incorrect ingredient from a supplier, and it was then mixed into the final product.

The recalled product carries the unique UPC code L044KUS0A-00. While the firm did admit to the ingredient change, it hasn’t disclosed exactly what the incorrect ingredient was or what it was replaced with. That anonymity has created more questions than answers for the public, but one thing is sure: the recall is now officially classified as Class II by the FDA. This means the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, though the risk of serious harm is considered remote.

Herbalife Relaxation Tea has been marketed for years as a relaxing beverage meant to trigger stress relief and relaxation. With web-based sales, Herbalife’s reach means consumers from coast to coast – and overseas – could be affected. The recall’s scope is vast, given the popularity of the tea with the wellness and fitness crowd.

As of the time of this recall, there have not been any reported cases of illness or adverse reaction to the recall, but warning is advised by the FDA. All consumers who purchased Herbalife Relaxation Tea with the above UPC number are advised to stop use and call Herbalife or the store where they purchased it for refund or return information. The fact that there are no reported health issues is reassuring but the fact that the substituted ingredient is unknown makes this recall serious.

Herbalife’s reaction to the recall will likely be under close scrutiny, especially with its staggering international market. Class II recalls do not always indicate an urgent public health threat but do highlight quality assurance and supply chain oversight loopholes that can lead to surprise – and perhaps dangerous – results for consumers.

As the demand for tea is skyrocketing and herbal beverages are in fashion, the incident serves to remind us that even “healthy” products are not exempt from production hiccups. The recall of Herbalife Relaxation Tea highlights the importance of ingredient verification and truthfulness, especially when products are marketed as wellness essentials.

Until additional data becomes known about the offending ingredient, customers are left playing it cautious. If the tea is sitting on your shelf, check the UPC and best-by date prior to making a decision regarding whether or not you’ll be brewing that next cup. Relaxation tea isn’t all that relaxing if you’ve got a side of uncertainty with it.
