Netflix is already planning an extended journey for its successful live-action take on One Piece, securing an early season 3 renewal before season 2 even drops.
The news broke during a yearly celebration of creator Eiichiro Oda’s legendary manga in Tokyo, leaving the fandom overdrive. It’s a significant change from the last time around – the streamer waited a couple of weeks after the premiere in 2023 to order up season 2, but this time they’re sailing ahead.
One Piece Season 2 is coming in 2026 and has the subtitle Into the Grand Line. Netflix summarizes the next installment as a high-seas adventure in which Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and the Straw Hat Pirates navigate treacherous waters, strange islands, and waves of powerful foes as they pursue the greatest treasure. The teaser released with the renewal does offer a glimpse of the crew in action again – along with some fascinating new characters.
Joining Godoy are returning series regulars Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero, and Taz Skylar. Season 2 also recycles Ilia Isorelys Paulino, Jeff Ward, and Michael Dorman, and introduces a wider cast that includes Charithra Chandran, Joe Manganiello, Katey Sagal, Lera Abova, Mark Harelik, Sophia Anne Caruso, Yonda Thomas, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Brendan Sean Murray, Callum Kerr, Camrus Johnson, Clive Russell, Daniel Lasker, David Dastmalchian, Jazzara Jaslyn, Julia Rehwald, Rob Colletti, Ty Keogh, Werner Coetser, Rigo Sanchez, James Hiroyuki Liao, Mark Penwill, and Anton Jeftha. Audiences can also look forward to Mikaela Hoover portraying Tony Tony Chopper in voice and face capture.
Behind the scenes, there is a big change for season 3. Ian Stokes, who penned two episodes and was a co-executive producer in season 1, will be paired with Joe Tracz as co-showrunner. Stokes comes in after Matt Owens left in March. Owens co-ran season 2 with Tracz following his co-running season 1 with Steven Maeda.
Oda is among executive producers for Season 2, with Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios, Tetsu Fujimura, Chris Symes, Christoph Schrewe, Maeda, Owens, and Tracz. Stokes will also join them in serving as an executive producer for season 3, guiding the ship as production gets underway later this year.
With this pre-emptive renewal, Netflix is giving a loud message – they’re going all-in on One Piece’s longevity. With the enormous fan base of the original manga and the positive welcome to the live-action series, it’s easy to understand why they’d want to secure another season before the next even reaches the screen. And with the promise of fantastic Grand Line travels and new characters, the anticipation is only intensifying.
For now, viewers will have to wait until 2026 to catch up with season 2, but the early greenlight for season 3 ensures one thing: the Straw Hat Pirates journey is not over yet.
