About Ellu Urundai

‘Ellu’ means Sesame seeds and ‘Urundai’ means balls so Ellu Urundai translates to Sesame balls. Ellu Urundai is a simple laddu made using just 3 basic ingredients available in your kitchen. It is made by roasting sesame seeds until golden, combining it with jaggery, cardamom then shaping into balls.

The traditional method to make ellu urundai is by roasting in a kadai, cooling down. Then grind it using a big mortar and pestle called as ural ullakai. This is called by different names ellu urundai in tamil, til laddu in hindi, sesame seeds laddu in english. Ellu (எள்) is sesame seeds, it has many benefits.

The nutty aroma of roasted sesame seeds blends beautifully with jaggery and cardamom making them taste so delicious. Sesame seeds are rich in calcium, iron so include it whenever you can and this is one of the best ways.

This ellu urundai is one of the immunity boosting sweet snack so do try and give it for your kids. Gugu is fond of this ladoo so I make it not for just festivals but often too. This ladoo does not need ghee just the oil in sesame seeds is enough to hold its shape. Also while grinding jaggery makes the mixture sticky which helps to shape it easily.

You can use black sesame seeds which is with skin or white sesame seeds which has skin removed. In South we call it Ellu Urundai and in North it is called Sesame Ladoo. It can be made for festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Gokulashtami, Sankranthi, Navratri etc.

Sesame oil is a popular ingredient used all over the world. Sesame oil is called nalla ennai in tamil which translates to ‘nalla’ meaning good and ‘ennai’ meaning oil – ‘nalla ennai’ which is further abbreviated and called ‘nallennai’. This oil has so many health benefits that in olden days our elders used to cook using this oil.
