Ookay returns to Dim Mak Records with a new project, and this one is coming out swinging.

The artist and producer just released his newest EP, ‘Proxima Nova’, a four-track EP that brings together several genres of electronic dance music while keeping listeners guessing with twists at each turn.

The name ‘Proxima Nova’ has a double meaning for Ookay. As he described, “Proxima is ‘next’ and Nova is ‘new’; a star with an abrupt large brightening. I wanted this music to reflect what’s next and bring brightness to my music. It is also a tribute to a font that has been used over the years and made a name for itself yet was still being reinvented, which speaks to my career.”. Bringing a rebirth of everything that has established Ookay up till this point.”

The EP begins with “Move Ya Body,” an energetic hybrid bass tune that melds trap, bass, and dancehall-inflected vocals into a high-energy configuration that sounds made for the dancefloor. Next up is the July release “Speakers Knockin,” which adds a shot of retro flavor and underground heat. The song tips into a bouncy UKG and bass house feel, with funky keyboard stabs and complextro-fueled rhythms lending it a playful yet punishing bite.

Things turn in a direction towards festival spirit with “All I Ever Wanted,” the third of the project. Having soulful vocals stacked over bouncy jersey club drums and gritty low-end synths, the song exudes trap festival feel while still sticking to Ookay’s melodic style. The vocals ride high as the percussion propels the rhythm along, and this one definitely seems geared towards getting played on a summer festival stage.

Wrapping up the EP is “Lose Control,” a song that pares airy, delicate vocals with a jarring drop into a sharp, heavy bassline. The dense production and robust sound design put the EP on a high note, leaving ears with a lasting impression of Ookay’s skill at balancing melody and heaviness.

Start to finish, ‘Proxima Nova’ is a statement album for Ookay. It’s an album that demonstrates his range while remaining faithful to the signature sound that’s gained him followers throughout the electronic music landscape. The blend of trap, bass, house, and jersey club styles is evidence that Ookay doesn’t fear taking risks and innovating, all in an effort to give his audience something that is equally nostalgic and progressive.

Out on August 22 via Dim Mak, ‘Proxima Nova’ continues Ookay’s streak of powerful releases that resonate with listeners throughout the electronic music genre. With its blend of heavy drops, bright vocals, and genre-defying creativity, the EP cements Ookay’s place as a producer who can reliably get the dancefloor moving and the energy lively.
