Devon Walker is officially saying goodbye to Saturday Night Live after three years.
The comedian and writer confirmed the news on Monday in an honest Instagram post looking back at his time on the NBC sketch show.
Walker initially signed on as a featured player with the SNL cast during Season 48 prior to being upgraded to repertory cast for Seasons 49 and 50. His resume prior to getting the job included writing credits on Netflix’s Big Mouth and Freeform’s Everything’s Trash.
In his departure announcement, Walker had a mixed opinion regarding the show and his three-year stint. Posting a screenshot of a note on his computer, he stated, “Me and the show did three years together, and sometimes it was really cool. Sometimes it was toxic as hell. But we did what we made the most of what it was, even amidst all of the dysfunction. We made a f—ed up lil family.”
The post was captioned “wait… did he quit or did he get fired? ” – a tongue-in-cheek reference to gossip about whether the move was his or the show’s. Along with his written statement, Walker posted behind-the-scenes photos from his time at Studio 8H, including a celebratory text exchange that read “I’m out” paired with a party hat emoji, and even a meme of President Joe Biden tripping on stairs.
He captioned the series of posts: “me and baby broke up.”
In a more extended message to fans and peers, Walker compared work in entertainment to “little marriages,” saying that although some persist for a while, most are transitory. He added that he was thankful to have had the SNL experience with fellow comedians Gary and Alex, labeling their path from performing at small bar shows to working at 30 Rock “a beautiful thing.”
While he confirmed the ups and downs of the gig, Walker signed off in a lighthearted mood, joking about appearing “caked up” in one of the pictures that he posted and taunting his future plan. “Anyway, I’m bout to head to Japan,” he wrote. “When I get back I’m tryna be in a prestige drama. Ideally something with Julianne Moore.” Walker’s departure is the latest cast upheaval for Saturday Night Live as the venerable NBC comedy prepares for its 51st season.
