Costco also issued a recall notice on its Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene, informing consumers that the unopened bottles may break spontaneously without anyone touching them.
The company issued the immediate alert on its website, which consumers needed to take preventive action.
According to the announcement, they sold those bottles between April 25 and August 25 of this year in 12 Midwest and Southern states. The recall includes purchases in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
The customers were instructed not to open or attempt to return the bottles to Costco warehouses. Costco instead advised disposing of the prosecco by wrapping the unopened bottle in paper towels, placing it in a plastic bag, and disposing of it. This was advised to minimize the risk of injury from potential broken glass.
Dispose of the product immediately,” the letter stated, with customer safety being a top priority. Costco promised consumers that they would not only receive a refund for the recalled prosecco if they presented the official recall letter at any Costco warehouse, but even if they did not produce the actual bottle.
It is unclear how many cases, if any, precipitated the company taking such a precautionary step. Costco did not explain whether any reports of breaking or exploding bottles were made before releasing the notice, but the pre-emptive step suggests concerns about product safety and liability.
Costco’s in-store brand Kirkland Signature is generally known to carry a huge quantity of wine and spirits, and its prosecco is also generally regarded as inexpensive and popular wine. A recall of a high-demand product illustrates how even good suppliers may have unforeseen safety risks during distribution and packaging.
Product recalls for the wine and spirits industry are not uncommon, particularly where there are concerns over bottle pressure, storage, or faulty packaging. Shattered glass bottles have a very high risk for consumers, so such a recall is a serious one on safety grounds.
Currently, Costco customers in the states involved are asked to examine their products and follow the disposal procedures outlined in the recall notice. Frustrating as it is, the company’s swift response aims to prevent potential accidents and reassure customer confidence in its Kirkland Signature brand.
This recall is serving as a reminder to consumers to be ever vigilant for authorized product safety notices and pay attention to them. The return policy of Costco is reassuring, but the focus is on risk avoidance from contaminated bottles. Costco has prompted consumers to spread the word of the recall to other potential buyers who have purchased the affected prosecco between the stated dates.
