Kerala is likely to experience heavy rainfall activity from Sunday (May 18) even as a low pressure area is expected to form over the Arabian Sea by May 22, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said.
As per the forecast, north and central Kerala districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall in the coming days.
“An upper-air cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the east-central Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast around May 21. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over the same region around May 22. Thereafter, it is likely to move northwards and intensify further,” the weather agency said in a special bulletin on Sunday.
Northern and central Kerala districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall from Sunday. Five northern districts – Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod – are on yellow alert for isolated heavy rainfall on Sunday. These districts along with Palakkad, Idukki, Thrissur and Ernakulam are on yellow alert on Monday (May 19). An orange alert for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on Tuesday. (May 20).
Strong winds
Strong winds likely at lower levels over Kerala and the Lakshadweep region from Sunday, the IMD added.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has advanced over some more parts of the south Arabian Sea, Maldives and Kanyakumari area, the south Bay of Bengal, the remaining parts of Andaman Islands and the Andaman Sea, according to the weather agency.
Fishers have been advised not to set out to sea from Sunday to Tuesday given the possibility of squally weather along the Kerala coast.
