Hayley Atwell is game for more multiversal action – and she’s got unfinished business with Captain Peggy Carter.
In a recent interview with Den of Geek, Hayley Atwell opened up about her desire to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically as Captain Carter, the multiversal version of her long-running MCU character. Describing Peggy as “an underserved character,” Atwell said she’s more than ready to bring her back – especially after sharpening her action chops in the Mission: Impossible franchise.
“I would love that,” Atwell said when asked if she’d suit up as Captain Carter again in a future Avengers movie. “There are so many things that she could do, there’s so much more I feel I can bring to a character because I’ve developed as time’s gone on.”
Why Atwell Believes Captain Carter Deserves Another Shot
Atwell first appeared as Peggy Carter in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, later reprising the role in Agent Carter, Avengers: Endgame, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where she made her live-action debut as Captain Carter, a super-soldier variant from an alternate reality.
But that version of Carter met a brutal end – quickly sliced in half by Scarlet Witch during her brief cameo in Multiverse of Madness. Fans were frustrated. So was Atwell.
Now, she’s advocating for a proper redemption arc.
“She hasn’t been given the platform that she knows she deserves,” Atwell said. “She’s really capable of doing so much more in the world. I just think she speaks to a modern time.”
Training With Tom Cruise Has Her Battle-Ready
Atwell’s wish to return comes with confidence. She credits her intense physical training from Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning and the upcoming The Final Reckoning with giving her the tools to fully embody a battle-ready super-soldier.
“Especially with all my Mission: Impossible training. I am ready. Let’s go!” she added.
In the next Mission installment, Atwell will return as Grace, joining Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt one last time to stop The Entity – a rogue AI threatening global collapse. The movie, billed as the franchise finale, also features Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, and Ving Rhames.
Will Marvel Listen?
While Marvel Studios hasn’t officially confirmed a return for Captain Carter, the multiverse remains a key theme in upcoming phases. With Avengers: Secret Wars expected to feature variant-heavy cameos and alternate timelines, Captain Carter’s return is still very possible.
Atwell’s previous appearances in animated (What If…?) and live-action multiversal entries make her a strong candidate to reprise the role in the next Avengers movie or another standalone project.
And with her fanbase still invested in Peggy Carter’s legacy – both as a founding S.H.I.E.L.D. member and a symbol of female strength in the MCU – Marvel could have the perfect opportunity to expand her story.
Bottom Line
Hayley Atwell is making it clear: she wants back in. And this time, she wants Peggy Carter to be more than just a cameo or casualty. With her action credentials stronger than ever, and the multiverse wide open, Captain Carter could be gearing up for a comeback.
And fans? They’re more than ready to watch her lead.
