In a recent case of violence that emerged from Jabalpur village, Parli taluka in the Beed district, where a man was abducted and then attacked by a mob with iron rods, belt, glass bottles and wooden stick, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Monday (May 19, 2025) called it a clear case of goondaism and that the State government has taken a serious cognizance of the matter.
Speaking to journalists in Beed he said, “Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has personally reviewed the case and issued necessary instructions. It does not matter whether one has political backing, such behaviour will not be tolerated in Maharashtra. Each and every one accused in the case will face stringent action. We have started the process to implement Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.”
Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil who visited Shivraj Narayan Divte at Swami Ramanand Teerth Rural Medical College and Hospital in Ambajogai where he is hospitalised after facing the brutal attack, expressed his anger and urged the CM to take stringent action against goons who have no fear of law.
“The videos are horrific and it has shaken our conscience. We as a State have to work together to eliminate goons for a healthy society. Sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh has still not received justice. Do we want to keep witnessing such cases? Every other day there are cases of violence and atrocities in Maharashtra. Where is society heading? Goons have no fear because the administration has let them on loose.”
On Monday, the Parli city police station registered another FIR in the case but against the victim. The FIR is filed by accused Samadhan Munde’s mother who has accused Divte and his friends of initiating the fight, saying they were the ones who first assaulted the accused, the police said.
Beed Superintendent of Police Navneet Kanwat said there have been seven arrests so far in connection with the case. “We presented them in court on Saturday (May 17, 2025) and received police custody for five of them till May 20. Two are juvenile in the case. The FIR lodged by Mr. Divte has 20 names. 10 are identified of which five are in custody and two are juvenile. Seven accused are wanted and the rest are not identified yet. On Monday, Mr. Munde’s mother lodged an FIR against two people who are from Mr. Divte’s group alleging that they first assaulted them.”
The police has registered a case of attempt to murder and rioting under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 Section 109 (attempt to murder), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 140(3) (kidnapping), 118(1) (hurting using dangerous weapons), 189(2) (unlawful assembly), 190 (unlawful assembly with a motive to commit an offence) and 191(3) (rioting while armed).
A fresh video emerged on Sunday (May 19, 2025) that shows Mr. Munde was beaten up by a group of men that had Mr. Divte in it from the side of assaulters.
On Monday, in a different case, another video emerged from video where two men are seen assaulting each other.
The incident took place on May 16, around 11 a.m. when the men who are under 20 years of age, had gathered at a Hanuman temple event where people had gathered for food and celebrations. According to police, a petty argument occurred (which is still under investigation) among the men, and they threatened each other. “We have urged everyone to not to give it a colour of caste conflict as these are budding criminals and some of them are associated with local politicians. They are from different caste and communities,” Mr. Kanwat said.
Assistant Police Inspector Mahadeo Dhakne said, “The first video that emerged on social media was from a location in which one can see around 20 men are beating Mr. Divte. Hearing his cry for help, people came forward to save him and he was taken to the Parli Government Hospital from there he was referred to Swami Ramanand Teerth Rural Medical College and Hospital in Ambajogai for further treatment. One of the assaulters had shot the video and made it viral by circulating it on WhatsApp groups and social media. We are still looking for him.”
On Monday, the police investigation revealed that Mr. Divte is not the victim in the case alone as he along with his group of friends were the first to instigate the fight. “The video of Mr. Divte’s group assaulting Samadhan Munde emerged on Sunday,” Mr. Dhakne added.
