The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday assured that families evicted from the banks of the Adyar River will be resettled free of cost in tenements constructed by the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) and will be provided with financial assistance for resettlement and livelihood support.

According to a press release from the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply, the State government had sanctioned ₹1,500 crore to restore Adyar River through the newly-formed Chennai Rivers Transformation Company Limited (CRTCL). For the current financial year, a total of ₹ 300 crore had been sanctioned to take up the restoration project.

To fully restore the Adyar River and improve its ecological conditions by preventing the discharge of untreated sewage, the removal of encroachments and the resettlement of residents living along the river banks are essential, the release said.

As part of this initiative, 593 families, residing along the banks of the Adyar River in Anakaputhur in Quaid-E-Millat Nagar, Thaai Mookambikai Nagar, Shanthi Nagar, and M.G.R. Nagar 3rd Street, will be resettled at TNUHDB tenements in Thailavaram, Keerapakkam, Perumbakkam, and Navalur.

In addition, residents of Jothi Ramalingam Nagar, Thideer Nagar, Jothi Ammal Nagar, Surya Nagar, and Malligai Poo Nagar will also be resettled in TNUHDB tenements. Each relocated family will receive ₹5,000 as one-time resettlement assistance, ₹2,500 per month as livelihood support for one year, and a grant of ₹2,500 to obtain an electricity connection, the press release added.
