The Devanahalli police have registered a case against a vehicle towing staffer for brutally assaulting a 40-year-old advocate inside the traffic police station in the presence of police personnel over a trivial row over towing charges. The towing staffer also filed a counter-complaint against the advocate, alleging criminal intimidation and assault.
The advocate Manjeshwar M., a member of the Karnataka State Bar Council and practising in Bengaluru, had visited the said station to secure the release of a vehicle belonging to his client which was seized in February this year. The vehicle was involved in an accident and was towed by a private firm to the police station.
Upon presenting the necessary documents and after receiving approval from the sub-inspector on duty, the release was agreed upon, subject to the payment of towing charges. However, his conversation with towing staffer Anil soon escalated into a full blown confrontation, over a dispute in towing charges.
The advocate alleged that Anil assaulted him and punched him in the face, in the presence of police officials, but was let go without any action. He said that the case illustrated how the police failed to protect an advocate from assault even within the confines of a police station.
In his counter-complaint, Anil alleged that the advocate threatened to file false cases against him, verbally abused, and assaulted him.
