Where the crash happened?
“The Air India flight crashed into a doctors’ hostel near the Ahmedabad Airport shortly after took off on Thursday (June 12, 2025)“, a senior police officer said.
The senior Ahmedabad police officer stated that about 70-80% of the crash site had been cleared. He also appealed to the public to cooperate for the green corridor for the ambulance.

“After the takeoff, the plane crashed here and after a preliminary enquiry, we got to know that the … plane crashed into a building, which is a doctors’ hostel. After a few minutes of the incident, the concerned authorities reached the spot… We have cleared about 70% to 80% of the area… We urge all the people to cooperate with us so that we can make a green corridor for the ambulance to go to the hospital,” the senior officer said.
Efforts are ongoing to ensure a safe and efficient rescue operation with the Gujarat Government mobilising three National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, comprising 90 personnel from Gandhinagar to the plane crash site.
The Ahmedabad City Police have issued an emergency number for the police emergency services and to get necessary information related to the plane crash.

Who were the passengers?
According to Air India, the Boeing 787-8 aircraft from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick was carrying 242 passengers and crew members. Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese and one Canadian national.
“We are aware that a flight from Ahmedabad to London has crashed near Ahmedabad airport. We are working with local authorities to urgently establish the facts and provide support. Our thoughts are with all those affected,” the British High Commission said in a brief statement on its official X handle.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his anguish on the plane crash. “The scenes emerging of a London-bound plane carrying many British nationals crashing in the Indian city of Ahmedabad are devastating,” Mr. Starmer said in a statement.
Flight operations suspended
All flight operations have been temporarily suspended at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad following the crash.

“As a result, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, is currently not operational. All flight operations are temporarily suspended until further notice,” a spokesperson of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport said in a statement.
The airport has also advised passengers to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates before proceeding to the airport.
“A private airline’s flight from Kolkata to Ahmedabad returned to NSCBI Airport here on Thursday (June 12, 2025) after getting airborne since the destination was closed after an Air India aircraft crashed shortly after take-off,” officials said.
“IndiGo flight 6E-318, which departed from Kolkata at 1:49 p.m., came back after being airborne,” an Airports Authority of India (AAI) spokesperson in Kolkata said.
Operational control room activated
Following the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has activated an Operational Control Room to coordinate response efforts and provide support to those affected. The Ministry initiated helpline numbers: 011-24610843 and 9650391859.
The Ministry has assured a swift response and full assistance to all impacted by the incident, as stated in an official post by MoCA_GoI.
Rescue operation till now
Reuters reported that at least 30 bodies have been recovered from a building from a building at the site of a plane crash in India’s western city of Ahmedabad, rescue personnel at the site said. “More people were trapped inside,” the rescue workers said.
“Six teams of the National Disaster Response Force and two from the BSF have been sent to undertake rescue and relief operations at the aircraft crash site in Ahmedabad on Thursday (June 12, 2025),” officials said.
“Two NDRF teams have reached the spot near the Ahmedabad airport while four more are on their way,” an officer of the federal force said.
“Two Border Security Force teams from the frontier headquarters of the force have also been sent to the accident site,” a BSF officer said.
Personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), who provide a counter-terrorist security cover to the airport, were among the first rescuers to have reached the crash site along with local fire and police officials.
“The disaster management team of the Western Railway is involved in relief and rescue operations at the site of the plane crash in Ahmedabad,” an official said here.
“A medical team and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel have been deployed to assist in the rescue efforts,” Vineet Abhishek, chief public relations officer, Western Railway, said.
