Apollo Spectra Hospital has introduced a minimally invasive radiofrequency therapy for haemorrhoids. The radiofrequency ablation of haemorrhoids under local anaesthesia (Rafaelo) is performed as a daycare procedure.

The risks are lower and recovery rate is faster, says colorectal surgeon Vani Vijay, senior consultant, GI-minimally invasive and robotic surgery.

The focus is on treating piles, a condition that affects around 40 million people in the country, commonly those aged 45 to 65 years.

Rafaelo is a 30-minute procedure performed under regional anaesthesia using a specialised probe to deliver controlled radiofrequency energy to haemorrhoidal tissue. The procedure does not involve tissue incision and preserves the surrounding anatomy, thereby minimising trauma.

Dr. Vani said she had witnessed its precision and effectiveness in over 150 cases. Globally, the procedure is preferred among patients aged 30 to 60 and working professionals with symptoms such as bleeding, pain or prolapse, who cannot afford a long recovery period. Those in sedentary jobs, including IT professionals, corporate staff and drivers, are also at risk.

It is also offered to women during postpartum period as it is gentle and effective, she said.

Rupinder Kaur, chief operating officer of the hospital, said the treatment was set to be a game changer in the fight against piles.
