Star Wars: Battlefront II has just set a new record on Steam, more than seven years after its original release.
Despite not receiving any new content since 2020, the DICE-developed and EA-published shooter saw a massive surge in players thanks to a fan-organized event called Resurgence Day.
On May 24, 2025, the movement brought tens of thousands of players back to the game in an effort to show EA that the Star Wars: Battlefront franchise is still very much alive, and worth continuing. As a result, the game hit an all-time peak of 18,523 concurrent players on Steam, shattering its previous record of 10,345 set in January 2021.
While the Steam figure alone might not seem groundbreaking, it’s important to understand that Steam represents just a slice of the game’s player base. The total number of players across platforms, including Xbox, PlayStation, the EA App, and the Epic Games Store, reportedly hit over 315,000 on Resurgence Day, according to industry insiders. That’s a staggering number for a game many assumed was past its prime.
The event has not only rekindled player interest, but it’s also sparked renewed enthusiasm among former developers. Mats Helge Holm, who worked on Battlefront II as a QA analyst, shared on Reddit that several ex-team members would love to get back together if a new installment gets greenlit. “Me, and having heard around my group of ex-colleagues, we want to get the gang back together,” he posted.
Harvey Newman, the lead animator on Battlefront II, echoed the sentiment. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), he said, “Loving the renewed hype around #Battlefront2! I was the lead animator on the game, if Battlefront 3 ever happens, I’d love to return. The team was excellent, and the community feedback loop was the best I’ve seen in my career. So many ideas left on the table!”
This groundswell of community and developer support is fueling speculation, and hope, that EA might finally revisit the series with a proper Battlefront III. While EA has made no official comment, the numbers speak for themselves: Star Wars: Battlefront II isn’t just surviving, it’s thriving.
The Star Wars Battlefront II Steam record is more than just a number. It’s a signal from a passionate fanbase, a willing group of devs, and a gaming legacy that still has fuel left in the tank. Whether EA listens or not remains to be seen, but one thing’s clear, the Force is strong with this one.
