It’s finally happening, David Beckham has officially been named for knighthood by King Charles, marking a major milestone in the football icon’s legendary journey.

The former England captain, fashion icon, UNICEF ambassador, and Inter Miami co-owner will soon become Sir David Beckham after years of public anticipation. The honor was revealed as part of King Charles’ birthday honors list, spotlighting individuals who’ve made extraordinary contributions to British life, and honestly, who fits that better than Beckham?

The official investiture ceremony will be held at a later date, but this title is more than just ceremonial flair. It recognizes Beckham’s incredible career as one of the greatest footballers of all time and his ongoing philanthropic efforts. With this title, his wife, Victoria Beckham, will now officially be known as Lady Beckham, yes, Posh Spice just got even posher.

Beckham, 50, started dominating headlines back in the 1990s when he burst onto the scene with Manchester United. Over nine years, he led the team to six Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy. He made history by becoming the first English player to rack up 100 Champions League appearances and then went on to win league titles in four different countries: England, Spain, France, and the United States. Basically, he was the first true global football icon before Instagram even existed.

His career with the English national team is just as epic. Beckham wore the captain’s armband for six years, leading England through three World Cups and two Euros. He earned a spot in the English Football Hall of Fame in 2008 and later joined the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2021. The man is a walking highlight reel, and now, he’s finally getting the official royal seal of approval.

But it’s not just about what he did on the pitch. David Beckham has also been deeply committed to humanitarian work. Since 2005, he’s served as a UNICEF ambassador, dedicating his platform to causes that support children and education. In 2003, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth. This knighthood by King Charles feels like the long-overdue upgrade everyone’s been waiting for.

His relationship with King Charles has only strengthened in recent years. In 2024, Beckham was named an ambassador for The King’s Foundation, the monarch’s charitable organization. In a heartfelt statement, Beckham shared how excited he was to support the foundation’s mission to educate young people and provide them greater access to nature. “Having developed a love for the countryside,” he said, “I’m also on a personal mission to learn more about rural skills, which is so central to the Foundation’s work.”

Just last month, Beckham was seen with King Charles and Queen Camilla at the Chelsea Flower Show in London. He joined them at the official opening of The Highgrove Shop, a royal pop-up selling products inspired by the King’s gardens. Beckham proudly sported a rose named in the king’s honor as he chatted with Charles and laughed at their shared jokes. “It was a great honor to join King Charles and Queen Camilla,” he captioned his Instagram post. He also praised gardening icon Alan Titchmarsh and hinted at encouraging more young people to pursue careers in horticulture, Sir David the gardener has a nice ring to it.

Beckham’s knighthood is more than just a royal nod. It’s a full-circle moment for someone who has not only changed the face of English football but also consistently used his fame for good. From Manchester to Madrid, from LA to London, David Beckham has always stayed on top, and now, he’s earned the ultimate title to match.
