Boom Merchant is reaffirming why he’s one of the most exhilarating presences in the subterranean world of techno. Glasgow’s finest producer has now released his new work, the Bad Trip EP, on the reputable Red Occultus label – and it’s an absolute demonstration of his skill to combine enchanting grooves with upstairs dance floor stimulation.
This is Boom Merchant’s second outing on Red Occultus, having previously enjoyed success with the label. With his signature style, the artist has long promoted his sound on respected imprints like Autektone Dark and his own Tribal Pulse, earning a dedicated following among techno enthusiasts who value both classic craftsmanship and contemporary production clout.
The Bad Trip EP gives us three songs, each with a distinct sonic character but bound together by Boom Merchant’s familiar layering and rhythmic accuracy.
The title cut, “Bad Trip,” establishes the mood with spookily atmospheric pads and a trancey vocal hook that sings about “seeing reflections,” and has a dreamlike quality of tension. Hurrying percussion develops the groove, drawing listeners in further into the hypnotic rhythm – the sort of tune that has a different dimension in a dark, crowded club.
Up next is “Solo,” which gets into the shuffling, percussive drums that create a strong foundation for whimsical call-and-response vocal samples. Underneath, there is a heavy, pulsating bassline that maintains the energy, providing DJs with a sought-after tool for both peak-hour intensity and late-night rolling sets.
Closing out the EP is “Top Boy,” quite possibly the most rhythmic track of the trio. A thumping bassline keeps the record moving, and snappy, fizzing hi-hats and stabbing synth stabs add a feel of urgency and motion. The payoff is a high-energy closer that’s guaranteed to light up any dance floor it encounters.
Boom Merchant’s music never fails to fill the gap between the dark, trancey side of techno and the sheer physicality of club-friendly tracks. Bad Trip is no exception, where he extends his own limits and provides DJs and listeners with a new batch of heavy ammunition for the night.
The Bad Trip EP is now available on major digital platforms, and fans can grab their copy through Red Occultus’s official channels. If you’re looking for hard-hitting, immersive techno, this one’s not to be missed.
