Country musician Bryan Martin is opening up after a dramatic encounter in which he was led offstage by police during a recent show in New York.
The 37-year-old performer was taken out of the show in mid-concert at the Schaghticoke Fairgrounds on Friday, August 29, after officials reported that he exhibited “signs of intoxication and erratic behavior.”
According to a release made by the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO), Martin was “forcibly escorted” out of the venue after he became resistant. “Because of his intoxicated state, he became belligerent and had to be forcibly escorted out,” the RCSO stated. “Initially, what at first glance looked like an act of aggression understandably sent onlookers and event coordinators into a tizzy.”. But within hours of the incident, Mr. Martin admitted he is an alcoholic. That confession changes the mindset from one of confrontation to one of sympathy.
Videos posted on social media depicted Martin yelling on stage before officers moved in and eventually dragged him off. The incident created an instant sense of concern among fans, many of whom feared for his health.
The next morning, Martin made a personal apology on Instagram and opened up about his current personal issues. “Sorry I disappointed y’all tonight … the truth is I’m not ok,” he confessed. “Haven’t been taking time for myself to be honest with me regarding my mental health.”
The Louisiana native said his hectic tour schedule and being away from family had taken a toll. “I miss my babies and my family … but recently I’ve learned I let my weak mind override my heart sometimes and tonight it got the best of me,” he posted.
Martin, who has become known for his gritty, authentic songwriting rooted in real-life battles, continued by acknowledging his ups and downs. “I apologize for the bad days … but I’m grateful for the countless good nights we’ve shared this year. It’s been the most consistent streak I’ve seen in years.”
The country singer then vowed to make changes, both for himself and his fans. “I’m going to take it easier,” he vowed. “Get back to songwriting and seeking help.” He also did admit candidly the part alcohol has had to play in his problems, penning, “I’m not ever proud when I grab another drink. [I] hope y’all can find it in you to forgive me and hope I can be a better person myself.”
Sheriff Kyle Bourgault also chipped in with a statement after the incident, commending deputies for conducting themselves professionally in the sensitive situation while bringing attention to the larger issue. “Our deputies handled the situation professionally and without harm to anyone involved,” Bourgault stated. “But the larger issue is not the resistance we encountered – it is the struggle Mr. Martin himself is enduring.”
The sheriff went on to say, “My hope is that Mr. Martin gets the resources and support he needs in order to navigate through this struggle and continue to gift people his music in a healthier manner.”
The news has received a tide of supportive comments from fans on social media, with many praising Martin for his candor and wishing him well as he battles his health. Many pointed out that his openness about alcoholism and mental illness could inspire others who are engaged in similar struggles to get help.
Martin, whose popularity has increased in recent years due to sincere hits such as We Ride and Beauty in the Struggle, has been known to tell personal anecdotes in his songs. This new installment, though painful, is consistent with his history of openness and candor.
For the time being, Martin indicates his attention will be on healing and a return to the essence of his craft. His fans, meanwhile, seem willing to stand behind him every step of the way.
