Caleb Plant was astonishingly beaten by huge underdog Armando Resendiz in one of the sport’s biggest upsets in 2025.

Plant, who famously was stopped by Canelo Alvarez in 2021, was looking to continue to get his career back on track in Las Vegas.

He took on Resendiz as an overwhelming favourite to get the job done, and set up a potential clash with Jermall Charlo, who won on the same bill.

But incredibly he was taken all the way and simply outworked and outlanded by the supremely stubborn Mexican.

He even wobbled the former IBF world champion with a counter right hand and left hook, a combination which seriously threatened Plant’s resistance.

But he regrouped and tried his best to match the Mexican’s output, albeit he was outlanded by 186 to his 108 punches on the night.

It also saw him outwork Plant in terms of percentage accuracy, with 31 per cent of his punches landing compared to Plant’s 21.

The judges’ scorecards were read out as a split decision, with Resendiz given the win by 116-112 on two scorecards.

But surprisingly the third card had ‘Sweet Hands’ winning the fight at a margin of 115-113 despite the fairly conclusive statistics and performance.

Fans were far from impressed with one writing: “They tried to rob him wow, how did Plant get a scorecard? Justice was served by the other two judges.”

Another agreed: “That judge must be punished. How on earth is that a split?”

A final fan added: “I thought Resendiz was getting robbed when I heard it was a split.”

The surprise victor has now captured the interim WBA super-middleweight world title, and will likely push for a shot at glory.

Meanwhile Plant will need yet another rebuild having lost three of his last five outings.

The American was in favour of his winning scorecard and believes he did enough to get his hand raised.

“I felt like it was close and in a close fight, sometimes it switches the other way,” Plant explained post-fight.

“I feel like I was in control enough and using the whole ring, using my jab, but the judges saw it the other way.

“It wasn’t that he was putting so much pressure on me. He caught me with one overhand right.

“That was pretty good. But other than that, nothing really hurt me or stunned me.

“I felt like I did good. I used my jab, I used the whole ring and was patient, but I wasn’t the better man tonight.

“I’ll just get back with my team. Go home to my family, spend time with my daughter. My son’s on the way and you know we’ll regroup and we’ll be back.”

Despite Plant’s defeat Charlo, who scored a stoppage victory over Thomas LaManna, is still keen to make the fight happen.
