Costco just made a move that has muffin lovers in their feelings, and depending on who you ask, it’s either a dangerously good change or an unforgivable mistake.
The fan-favorite chocolate muffins from the bakery section recently got a recipe upgrade, and shoppers across the U.S. are now split down the middle about it.
A Costco staffer confirmed the update earlier this month at the Covington, Washington location, where longtime member Connie shared on Facebook that the samples tasted “very moist” and “they had changed the recipe.” Connie added, “I guess they are listening to what people want,” reflecting the wave of feedback Costco has been getting about their baked goods lately.
Some customers have totally embraced the new muffins. “It’s way better! Not the same as the old, but way better than the cardboard they tried replacing it with,” one fan wrote online. Others shared that they didn’t realize there was a change until a bite in, with one husband commenting they tasted “way better this time.” One shopper even called it a “dangerously good” move by the warehouse giant.
But of course, not everyone’s thrilled. A disappointed customer named Sam took to X, formerly Twitter, to rant: “Note to Everyone: I would recommend NOT buying Costco muffins. Since the change, they are terrible… very disappointing.” Another member wasn’t even focused on flavor, they just wanted the massive muffins back. “Annoyed that Costco got rid of the big muffins they used to sell, only place I could get my muffin fix,” they added.
Costco hasn’t officially commented on the bakery tweaks, but the reactions show the power of comfort food nostalgia, and how quickly people notice when something’s different, even if it’s small.
Meanwhile, this isn’t the only update causing waves at Costco. Over in the food court, some locations have stopped calling out order numbers. The result? Pure chaos. One shopper said the new setup was “not great and not efficient,” explaining how everyone just stood around confused until someone found a tiny sign saying order numbers wouldn’t be called out anymore. Another called it “slow and stupid,” saying it took them 10 minutes just to get a hot dog and Coke.
Costco’s also been stirring things up at checkout with a new “scanning” system and dropping three new products this July at lower prices than Amazon’s Prime Day deals. And if you’re eyeing a membership, now’s the time, Costco is offering a Gold Star membership for $65, bundled with a free $20 digital Costco Shop Card. That’s a sweet deal, even if your muffins aren’t as sweet as you remember.
