The State government should take responsibility for allocating more funds from the Centre for further development of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) and a resolution should be passed in the Assembly not to privatise the public-sector unit, CPI State secretariat member P. Harinath Reddy said.
As part of the State-wide protest, a large-scale dharna was held in front of Tirupati District Collectorate under the auspices of AITUC, CITU, INTUC and IFTU on Monday. Mr. Harinath Reddy attended the programme as the chief guest. Speaking to media after participating in the dharna, he said both the State and Central governments must turn the VSP into a profitable entity.
He demanded that the government reappoint 4,000 dismissed contract workers of the VSP. Left parties in the State have strongly opposed the dismissal of the contract workers and announced their support for their struggle. He said people of the state were worried that the VSP would be sold to the corporates, and urged against privatising the steel plant.
