A 75-year-old tribal man who suffered serious injuries in an attack by an elephant on Friday in Attappady in Palakkad, Kerala, succumbed to his injuries at Government Medical College Hospital, Thrissur, on Saturday.

Mallan, a senior member of Nachikkonayil hamlet near Cheerakkadavu in Pudur panchayat of Attappady, was grazing his cattle along with his wife and grandchild on Thursday when the attack took place.

One elephant from a herd of four that stationed at a distance charged at Mallan suddenly and hurled him wildly. His wife and grandchild raised an alarm and local residents who came to his rescue drove away the elephant herd.

Mallan had suffered serious injuries. Forest staff carried him to Attappady Taluk Tribal Speciality Hospital at Kottathara, from where he was shifted to Government Medical College Hospital, Thrissur.

Mallan is the latest victim of the ongoing huma-wildlife conflict across the State.
