Manchester United and Tottenham, sat 16th and 17th in the Premier League respectively, have one final chance to salvage something from what’s been a desperately disappointing season for both sides on Wednesday night as they contest the Europa League final.

The Red Devils make the trip to Spain as marginal favourites for victory having dismantled Athletic Bilbao 7-1 on aggregate in the semi final, and also boast considerably more success in winning finals in recent years having won trophies in each of the last two seasons.

Ruben Amorim’s side are the only team unbeaten throughout the entirety of their Europa League campaign, but will need to turn their form around against fellow Premier League teams around having picked up just two points out of a possible 24 from their last eight league games.

Tottenham sit just one place above the relegation zone in the Premier League, leaving both sides competing in Wednesday’s final on track for their lowest domestic finish in upwards of 50 years.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have the extra burden of bidding to get rid of a long running trophy drought, with the club not having lifted any silverware since winning the League Cup 17 years ago, losing four finals since.

The north London side secured their place in Wednesday’s final by defeating European semi final debutants Bodo/Glimt of Norway in up in the Arctic Circle, getting through 5-1 on aggregate.

Spurs have also had a torrid time in the Premier League of late, though perhaps with their attention more set on their Europa League campaign, with just one win in their last 11 league games, picking up one point in their last six.

Tottenham are unbeaten against Manchester United in their last six meetings, winning all three times they’ve met this season, giving Postecoglou a 2-0 lead over Amorim in their managerial head to head record.

The only time the two have met on the European stage before came in the second round of the 1963-64 European Cup Winners’ Cup, with United progressing 4-3 on aggregate after a 4-1 win at Old Trafford in the second leg.
