Friday horse racing tips
- HAYDOCK
6.40: Commanding Officer 11/8 (1pt)
7.50: Participle 1/1 (1.5pts) - DOWN ROYAL
7.08: Dallas Star & Poetic Sound (Combination Exacta/Forecast) (1pt)
Commanding Officer
Charlie Appleby and William Buick are having a great time of things this season so far.
And without the likes of Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien dominating some of the big races here and there in Britain, they’d be enjoying dominant success.
They have Commanding Officer, a 150,000 euro yearling and by Teofilo looks a great prospect on debut.
Only three runners have had the benefit of a run already but each have failed to show more than enough to put them below 8/1.
With the exception of Morris Dancer, another Godolphin-owned horse, but trained by John & Thady Gosden.
He should be one to consider but with the potential of Commanding Officer, at a well-backed price is still value in an otherwise weak race.
Participle
It’s another big favourite at Haydock that looks the best option.
Trained by Ralph Beckett, ridden by Rossa Ryan, a Frankel filly, one with plenty of potential and progression coming into this for just her second race after placing second on debut 288 days ago.
Her price has fluctuated between better than evens to just a touch of odds-on.
So even money at this stage still looks solid given her ability and with the benefit of a filly’s allowance could win nicely under a bold ride.
Dallas Star & Poetic Sound (Combination Exacta)
Dallas Star has shown star potential plenty of times and although he’s only scooped £65k in earnings so far he looks set to take a step forward soon.
The four-year-old colt beat The Euphrates at Leopardstown in April last year which seemed to set him up for that huge progression that was kind of expected.
But when featuring in the Derby at 33/1 placed far back in 14th.
He returned next season, back in February of this year, to win a fairly lowkey all-weather race at Dundalk but hasn’t won since.
That said, he went up in trip at Leopardstown just two weeks ago placing well behind Kyprios and though never get close it looked like a step in the right direction in terms of being a horse for 2m.
Goodie Two Shoes looks dangerous after that win at Gowran earlier this month but still may have to find more to compete with Dallas Star looking to improve.
Poetic Sound is the favourite at 10/3 but there’s no guarantee.
However, the brown gelding trained by G M Lyons is looking to benefit from being unexposed.
On just his fifth start on the turf he placed two lengths behind Kyprios.
This kind of step up with each race while also being suited to the step up in trip each time suggests he’s a very progressive horse that’s not quite reached his full potential.
The pair should come home in a 1-2 and looks a great price for a combination forecast or exacta with no short priced favourite.
