The former England striker mutually agreed to leave the BBC after apologising for sharing a post that led to accusations of anti-semitism.

Lineker shared a video which likened supporters of Israel to rats, similar to the antisemitism shown during Nazi Germany.

The post was deleted but widely viewed on social media, and the 64-year-old will now depart the broadcasting giants after 26 years.

However, Lineker could return to football presenting as soon as this summer for the Club World Cup in the United States.

Lineker’s Goalhanger Productions company are said to be considering the project with DAZN, who tournament’s global rights holders.

This could lead to The Rest Is Football covering the World Cup too, as per a Goalhanger Productions representative in The Guardian report.

“We’re keen to take a similar approach to what we did around the [2024] Euros, with The Rest is Football going out more regularly across the tournament.

“We’ll certainly be covering the World Cup, though no production plans have been finalised yet.”

Lineker has presented the iconic Match of the Day since 1999 and will be replaced by Kelly Cates, Gabby Logan and Mark Chapman.

Should the aforementioned talks with DAZN progress, he could front coverage of the revamped Club World Cup.

The once annual tournament will now be held every four years and feature 32 teams from across world football.

Champions League finalists Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan are two of the European sides set to feature in the United States.

Manchester City will face Wydad AC, Al Ain FC and Juventus in their group whilst Chelsea meet Flamengo and Esperance de Tunis.

The Blues were also due to play against Club Leon, but the Mexican side have been disqualified following FIFA disciplinary proceedings.

Club Leon and Pachuca failed to meet tournament regulations on multi-club ownership, with both clubs owned by Grupo Pachuca.
