A 14-year-old girl, Anakendu, who was suffering from acute liver failure, was given a second chance at life, thanks to a timely liver transplant performed at KIMSHEALTH and her mother’s brave decision to be her donor, a statement issued by the hospital said..
The patient who was admitted in an acute state at the hospital was immediately admitted to the liver intensive care unit and initiated on advanced liver support treatment. However, her condition deteriorated soon and she had to be placed on ventilator support.
As an immediate liver transplant was proposed as the only viable option to save her life, her mother came forward to be the donor. As the family had significant financial challenges, the life-saving transplant was done with aid from various sources, including KIMSHEALTH, the Department of Social Justice as well as crowdfunding.
The transplant team at KIMSHEALTH said that the transplant in Anakendu’s case had been particularly challenging because of the patient’s acute condition.
Following the surgery, the girl’s condition improved steadily; her cognitive function returned to normal, and her liver functions stabilised significantly. After a three-week stay in the hospital, Anakendu was discharged in good health and is expected to return to school within two months.
