If you tried asking ChatGPT a question today and were met with silence, or worse, an error, you’re not alone. OpenAI’s flagship chatbot is experiencing a major global outage, affecting users across free, Plus, and even Enterprise accounts.

Searches for “is ChatGPT down” skyrocketed early June 10, 2025, after thousands of users reported errors ranging from “too many requests” to total unresponsiveness. Downdetector showed a sharp spike in issue reports, and OpenAI later confirmed “elevated error rates” and slow response times across ChatGPT, Sora (its video generation tool), and multiple API components.

So what’s actually happening?

According to OpenAI’s system status page, the problem has persisted for over five hours, with no full resolution yet in sight. While some users are managing to squeeze out replies by switching to lower-tier models like GPT-3.5 (internally referred to as “o3”), premium models like GPT-4o have been near-unusable for most.

Even more confusing: some users claim certain models are still working in specific regions or contexts. For example, GPT-4.1-mini was reported to be running with minimal lag in parts of the U.S., while others in Europe and Asia couldn’t access ChatGPT at all, regardless of tier.

Who’s impacted?

  • Students relying on ChatGPT for assignments
  • Professionals using it for workflow automation
  • Developers working with GPT APIs
  • Casual users on the free plan
  • Plus and Enterprise users expecting premium stability

The outage has sparked frustration, and memes, across Reddit, X, and tech forums. Some even speculated whether OpenAI might be rolling out a secret update or feature set. However, no such announcement has been made.

TechRadar and other tech news outlets have been live-blogging the chaos, collecting user experiences in real-time. Reports came in from Norway, Germany, the U.S., New Zealand, Indonesia, and more, all pointing to a widespread issue that is disrupting work, study, and daily routines.

Several users shared creative workarounds:

  • Switch to GPT-3.5 (o3) for slower but functional responses
  • Stick to ongoing projects in ChatGPT, which may respond better than new chats
  • Use API keys through third-party apps that may be cached or less impacted

Still, these are temporary fixes. OpenAI has yet to issue a comprehensive explanation or ETA on a full recovery.

The Bigger Picture
Today’s outage is a reminder of how deeply ChatGPT has embedded itself in people’s workflows. From productivity to content creation, customer service to casual curiosity, the reliance is real, and outages hit hard.

For now, if you’re stuck wondering whether ChatGPT is still down, the answer is: yes, for many, it still is.

Stay tuned. OpenAI is actively investigating. But until then, you might have to go old-school and Google your questions. Or worse, do things manually.
