Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has shown that he recently had a treatment to have skin cancer removed, thanking doctors for acting quickly and reminding his fans to be serious about sun protection.

The 58-year-old celebrity chef, famous globally for programs like Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares, posted the news on Instagram in an open post depicting bandages placed beneath his ear where the procedure was performed. Ramsay described that he had basal cell carcinoma, a prevalent form of non-melanoma skin cancer, excised by experts.

“Thanks and so grateful for the amazing team at The Skin Associates and their speedy reactive removal of this basal cell carcinoma, thanks,” Ramsay posted. He also assured fans with a dash of humor, writing: “Don’t forget your sunscreen this weekend, I promise you it’s not a facelift. I’d be requiring a refund.”

Support messages poured in quickly from other celebrities and fans. TV judge Robert Rinder made a comment with a heart emoji, and Ramsay’s daughter Holly posted a heartfelt “love you dad.” Cancer Research UK replied too, thanking Ramsay for raising awareness of the risks posed by sun exposure using his platform. “Glad to hear you’re doing well, Gordon, and thanks for raising awareness of how important it is to stay safe in the sun,” the charity wrote, encouraging the public to seek shade, cover up, and apply sunscreen generously.

Basal cell carcinoma, as defined by the NHS, occurs in the uppermost layer of the skin and is predominantly caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun or tanning beds. It tends to be a small lump or pigmented area, typically on areas that are exposed to the sun like the head, neck, shoulders, hands, and legs. Although not typically life-threatening, prompt diagnosis and removal are necessary to avoid complications.

Ramsay’s health update follows as he still manages to balance his hectic career. Besides presenting popular television shows, he also appears on the ITV travel show Gordon, Gino and Fred alongside chefs Fred Sirieix and Gino D’Acampo. His restaurant empire, Gordon Ramsay Restaurants, has received a total of 17 Michelin stars over the years and now possesses eight.

By drawing attention to his own health scare, Ramsay is part of a growing list of public figures using their influence to spread the word about preventing skin cancer. His reminder is a timely warning for fans: sunscreen is not optional, it’s mandatory.
