The government, on Wednesday, released ₹153 crore on a single day to clear long-pending Gram Panchayats bills.

This huge financial push has resulted in the clearance of 9,990 bills, all under the ₹10 lakh category, providing much-needed relief to Panchayats and Sarpanches who spent from their funds. These bills have been pending since the BRS government.

“The initiative is part of the government’s commitment to address financial backlogs inherited from the previous administration, which had left a significant volume of Gram Panchayat bills unpaid,” an official said. The present government has prioritised the clearance of pending dues, and the outstanding bills up to August 2024 will be addressed in a phased manner.

Alongside the Gram Panchayat payments, the government has also sanctioned ₹85 crore for various developmental works under the Special Development Fund (SDF). These funds are expected to help Sarpanches with their debts and also contribute to ongoing service delivery.
