Lynx spider – Peucetia viridana – Oxyopidae
This Green lynx spider appears very white and pale
but has all characters of P.viridana only . I feel
it can be a colour variant or paleness may be due
to molting which I am not sure. Lynx spiders,
particularly the Green Lynx Spider ( Here Peucetia
viridana ) exhibit strong maternal care. Female
Lynx spiders protect their egg sacs by dedicating
significant time to guarding their egg sacs, even
to the point of starvation. The mother spider
will help the spiderlings emerge from the egg sac
by tearing it open. After hatching, often guard
their young spiderlings until they can fend for
themselves. After hatching, the spiderlings often
remain near the mother and egg sac for some time.
The mother may continue to protect them during
this period. Eventually, the spiderlings will
disperse by ballooning, using a silk thread to be
carried by the wind. While guarding the eggs and
spiderlings reduces the mother’s lifetime but
naturally increases the survival rate of
spiderlings to a great extent
