Green shade nets arranged at important traffic junctions have been providing much needed relief for vehicle drivers, thanks to the initiative of Vizianagaram Municipal Corporation.
With Vizianagaram city having little green cover and as many areas come under commercial zones space for growing trees is limited. As mercury touches almost 40C everyday, the people are unable to move from their homes. Employees and others who need to travel in the heat for their work are falling victims of sunstroke.
Vizianagaram Municipal Commissioner P. Nallanayya observed that many people were exposed to harsh heat at important traffic junctions as they needed to wait at least two to three minutes. To help the commuters green shade nets were arranged at Balaji junction, Mayuri junction, Ring Road and other places. The Corporation also arranged water bowls near trees to help birds to get water. The bows have been fixed to trees and the officials and staff have been instructed to fill up those bows with water every day. A majority of those bowls and water feeders were arranged at parks managed by the Corporation.
Water troughs have been arranged for animals which move on roads. Cows, dogs and other animals would have access to clean water with these facilities. Mr. Nallanayya urged people to provide water for birds and animals in their vicinity since they were also being affected by the heat. Vizianagaram Rotary Club president Arisetti Nageswara Rao, Vasavi Club president Mandavilli Venkata Raju and others arranged water kiosks for passersby at Jagannatha Swamy temple, Thotapalem and other areas with the support of members of their respective organizations.
