Human remains showing up just steps from Taylor Swift’s beachside mansion in Rhode Island has stirred up serious buzz, and a wave of fear across New England.
Police were called early Wednesday to the upscale Watch Hill neighborhood after someone found what looked like part of a human leg near Everett Avenue, only a few football fields away from Swift’s famous seaside house. Local station NBC10 broke the story, quoting resident Taylor Day, who said, “I would never expect anything like that, and especially not in Watch Hill.”
Even though cops are trying to keep things chill by saying there’s no foul play suspected, locals aren’t buying it. “I would definitely disagree with that,” Day told reporters. “I think finding a leg is very suspicious.” And she’s not alone. This discovery didn’t just freak out the quiet Rhode Island neighborhood, it added fuel to a much bigger theory that’s been creeping through social media for weeks: there’s a serial killer lurking in New England.
The possible human remains were immediately sent to the Rhode Island Medical Examiner’s Office for further analysis, but investigators haven’t confirmed who the person is or how they ended up there. What’s got everyone extra jittery is the pattern. This leg bone marks the 13th body, or partial remains, found in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts just since March. That’s not normal.
Here’s what’s got people freaking out: five bodies in Massachusetts, five in Connecticut, and now three in Rhode Island. Two of them showed up in the tiny town of Taunton, Massachusetts, alone. So yeah, it’s not a stretch to wonder what’s really going on.
Even former FBI agent Scott Duffey weighed in, saying that the lack of public info is only making the serial killer theory grow legs (no pun intended). “From what I’ve seen or heard, not enough is being put out there, so we’ll continue to create that serial killer idea,” Duffey told Fox News.
But at the same time, he’s trying to play it cool. “Nothing that I have seen would arise to a serial killer being responsible for any or most of these people who have been found,” he added. So far, cops haven’t drawn any official connections between the cases, but people online aren’t waiting for a press release.
There’s only one case that seems to be fully wrapped up. Back in March, a woman named Suzanne Wormser from Groton, Connecticut, was found dismembered and stuffed into a suitcase. That’s horrifying on its own. Her roommate, 68-year-old Donald Coffel, was arrested for the murder. Police said the two had a fight over crack cocaine that escalated way too far.
Coffel died just recently at the Corrigan Correctional Center. NBC Connecticut reported that at the time of his arrest, he was in serious pain from cancer.
The rest of the bodies found since March? Still unsolved. Still unexplained. And people are rightfully nervous.
Watch Hill isn’t the kind of place where crime happens often. It’s one of Rhode Island’s wealthiest spots and home to not just Taylor Swift but other celebrities and mega-rich vacationers. So finding a human leg on a beach path there? That’s next-level creepy.
Whether it’s a coincidence or something more sinister is still up in the air. But with thirteen sets of remains found in such a short span, and in such close proximity, locals and online sleuths aren’t just going to sit quietly. Until law enforcement gives clear answers, the theory of a serial killer stalking New England isn’t going anywhere.
