The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy pre-monsoon showers across Kerala on Friday (Mauy 23, 2025).
It has issued a yellow alert for 12 districts, excluding Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.
The weather system catalysing the monsoon over Kerala will likely intensify in the next 48 hours. The IMD is reportedly poised to declare the onset of the monsoon, with rainfall intensifying.
Rough seas
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information (INCOIS) has issued a special alert for Kerala’s coastal districts. It has warned of choppy seas and tidal surges.
It has predicted waves reaching a height of up to 3.2 metres in Kozhikode and Kannur coastal localities. The INCOIS has advised fishers to beach their boats and safely anchor their sea-going vessels.
The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has advised sea-faring fishers to exercise caution. The SDMA has also advised holidaymakers to avoid frequenting beaches or venturing into the sea.
The State government has warned motorists against traversing the rugged regions of the State after nightfall. It has asked emergency services to stand by for mudslides, wall collapses, uprooted trees, and fallen powerlines.
