Kathryn Newton and Lana Condor are headed into dangerous waters, literally in “Devil’s Mouth”.
The two stars have been cast in the upcoming thriller Devil’s Mouth, directed by Jeff Wadlow. Co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Lionsgate, this survival film throws a group of college friends into an underwater cave system while they’re on their way to Thailand. The twist? There’s a bull shark waiting for them down there.
This marks a genre shift for both Newton and Condor. Newton, who most recently played Cassie Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, is no stranger to intense action. Meanwhile, Condor, best known for her role in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and more recently Coyote vs. Acme, is diving headfirst into the thriller world.
The screenplay comes from Aja Gabel, known for The Staircase, and Myung Joh Wesner, a writer on the upcoming Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. With a mix of survival horror and psychological tension, Devil’s Mouth sounds like it’s going to keep audiences on edge.
But Newton’s schedule is heating up beyond this. In March, it was announced she’s also signed on for Ready or Not 2, reuniting with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Newton previously worked with the pair on the 2024 vampire flick Abigail. She couldn’t hide her excitement, taking to Instagram to say, “So grateful to be back with my favorite directors!!! Love you @mattbettinelliolpin and @tylergillett thank you.”
The original Ready or Not became a cult horror favorite, with Samara Weaving playing a bride hunted by her in-laws as part of a twisted family tradition. The film pulled in nearly $58 million worldwide and got strong reviews. Weaving is officially back for the sequel, recently telling ComicBook.com, “I’m all in… We’ve done the spit handshake, but we haven’t cut each other’s hands and rubbed our blood together.”
Despite her rising profile in the Marvel world, Newton remains focused on keeping her roles varied. Landing the role of Cassie Lang was a dream for her, saying, “One of the biggest goals of my career was to be a Marvel superhero. I would do it forever if I could.” Still, she’s eager to take on new challenges and push herself as an actor.
Newton’s career actually started when she was just four years old in an HBO short film called Bun-Bun. She recalled the experience fondly: “I didn’t even say my lines half of the time. I just thought I was dressing up.”
Now Kathryn Newton taking on bull sharks in “Devil’s Mouth”, cultish in-laws, and Marvel villains, and seems more unstoppable than ever.
