Unauthorised extensions and alterations in violation of fire safety norms and building rules reportedly hampered rescue operations at the textile complex near the Kozhikode Mofussil Bus Stand, where a massive fire broke out on Sunday (May 19). Police sources said fire exits were blocked and ventilation was poor, making it difficult for rescue personnel to access the affected areas.

District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh said a detailed investigation would be conducted with the support of experts to clarify the concerns. “We cannot confirm the cause or comment on suspected violations of building rules or unauthorised extensions without a proper inspection. It will be examined thoroughly,” he told the media on Sunday.

Functionaries of the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti said the four-hour-long firefighting effort exposed the city’s inability to manage such a major emergency effectively. They added that, according to preliminary estimates, textile shop owners suffered losses of around ₹50 crore.
