Heavy monsoon rain and strong winds lashing Kannur since May 20 have caused damage to power infrastructure, with the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) reporting a cumulative loss of ₹8.96 crore.
The Kannur Electrical Circle suffered losses amounting to ₹4.92 crore. A total of 616 electricity posts were destroyed, and line wires snapped at 1,953 locations. A distribution transformer was also damaged.
In the Sreekandapuram Electrical Circle, the estimated loss stands at ₹4.04 crore. Here, 95 high-tension (HT) and 677 low-tension (LT) electric posts were damaged. HT cables snapped at 42 spots, while LT lines were broken in 1,531 locations. Two distribution transformers were damaged.
The KSEB has announced a priority-based approach for power restoration. The immediate focus will be on repairing faults in the 11 kV line, which supplies power to the entire area. Restoration of low-tension lines will follow, and individual consumer complaints will be addressed thereafter.

Electrical accidents or suspected hazards should be reported immediately to the respective KSEB Section office or the emergency number 9496010101. Power outage complaints can be registered through KSEB’s toll-free customer care number 1912, at 9496001912, or via WhatsApp.
Meanwhile, widespread damage to houses has been reported across various parts of the Iritty and Thalassery taluks.
According to the India Meteorological department (IMD), Kannur has received the highest rainfall in the State since March 1, recording 774.5 mm against a normal of 208.8 mm.
A red alert has been issued in Kannur for Thursday (May 29, 2025) and Friday (May 30, 2025), with the IMD forecasting very heavy rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm in 24 hours.
